Validation of a novel technique for creating simulated radiographs using computed tomography datasets

CT datasets were imported into a specialized DICOM viewer (ORS Visual, Object Research System, Montreal, Canada). A plug-in was created to deform image data matrices and simulate distortion, magnification, and tissue attenuation features of radiographs. This plug-in was produced based on two main concepts, ray tracing and ray casting.
In conclusion, we produced a novel plug-in for a commercially available DICOM viewer (ORS Visual) that simulates radiographs based on high-resolution CT volume cuboidal datasets, from any angle or magnification factor. This new tool should be refined and applied in future studies comparing teaching methods using interactive tools and simulated radiographs vs. traditional teaching methods.
